How to Sharpen Your Drill Bits for the Ocean Clipper

The Ocean Clipper CNC Angle line utilizes one drill and one punch, and therefore you will need to resharpen drill bits. Fortunately resharpening drill bits is a simple and easy process even fore inexperienced operators, and the videos below are designed to make this process even easier.

While a punch and die set might provide 5000 impacts before the set needs to be replaces, a good quality drill bit such as the Ocean PENETRATOR Cobalt drill bit can easily yield 500 holes or more per sharpening, and over 50,000 holes from a single drill bit, making the consumable cost of your angle line even cheaper than a double punch setup.

Sharp drill bits make a huge difference on your Ocean Clipper Angle line (as do fresh punch and die sets). The difference between a sharp drill bit and a dull drill bit, is night and day.

We have two different approaches to sharpening twist drill bits.

  A. NEW video - for Ocean PENETRATOR drill bits (simple 1-stage sharpening)

B. OLD video - for Nachi or Cleveland drill bits (complex 2-stage sharpening)

If you have never tried the new Ocean PENETRATOR Drill bits we suggest you give them a try. These new drill bits.....

  • Are much faster to sharpen (only one process)

  • Require a faster feed rate (approx 20%) and therefore drill faster than regular twist drill bits

  • Eliminate long stringy chips that fling off the spindle, and take so much space in the chip-drawer

A. NEW DRILL SHARPENING VIDEO - For OCEAN PENETRATOR Drill Bits

This new video has been specifically created to assist operators in sharpening the NEW Ocean PENETRATOR drill bits. These drill bits feature a chip breaker design that eliminates the long stringy chips, and allows faster cleaner drilling.

The special design creates a narrow web, and this eliminates the complex sharpening that is required with regular twist drill bits.

Drill Grinding Tips

  • We recommend you switch out your drill bits before they get dull, that way you will only have to do a light dressing / resharpening to get them back into service. If you wait too long and continue to use them while they are dull, you will have to spend more time on the grinder doing the resharpening.

  • Tell tale signs that your drill is getting dull include.....

  • The drilling time per hole starts to increase

  • Steam starts emanating from the tip of the drill bit

  • A blue color starts appearing on the chips / curly cues / discs

  • A blue color starts appearing on the cutting surface of your drill

  • A harmonic noise/vibration starts emanating coming from the drill bit

  • You should get approximately 300 plus holes per sharpening. Of course your own actual mileage may vary considerably from these numbers.

  • You should also adjust your drilling feed rate on your Ocean Clipper Angle Line to get the best compromise between drilling time and the number of holes drilled per sharpening. Increasing the feed rate increases the amount of metal removed, but reduces the number of holes per sharpening.

B. Drill Sharpening Tutorial Video for Regular Twist Drill Bits

The Ocean Clipper can be supplied with a Rush 250A Drill Grinder if you don't already have a drill grinder. The drill Grinding Tutorial Video below will show you how to sharpen your drills and achieve the ideal drill point geometry for Structural Steel, using the Rush 250A.

The video below pertains to standard (non chip-breaker) twist drill bits such as Nachi and Cleveland

IMPORTANT - Please note the following

In the video (at 2mins 13 secs), we make mention of the front clearance relief angle selector where we say that this setting should not change - This is incorrect - please consult the manual supplied with your drill and adjust this setting according to the drill diameter

  • For 7/16" - 1/2" set at 0

  • for 9/16-11/16" set at 0

  • for 23/32 - 1/9-16" set at 2

Follow the directions in the video - adjust the center point height to suit - too flat and the drill will not center well - too high and the drill point will wear too fast.

All Rush 250A drill grinders supplied after July 2004 have a steel wheel with diamond abrasive coating. The diameter of this wheel does not change - of course the coating wears out and the wheel has to be replaced periodically, depending on the amount of drilling and sharpening you do. Because the wheel diameter does not change all settings remain constant for each drill diameter. If you have an older style consumable abrasive wheel, the diameter will change with time and all settings must be adjusted accordingly.

You can achieve great drill performance using several different approaches to drill grinding. We recommend that you experiment with your own approach and narrow down your own style of drill grinding. Drill grinding is as much an art as a science.

You should also adjust your drilling feed rate on your Ocean Avenger Drill Line to get the best compromise between drilling time and the number of holes drilled per sharpening

If you are using Nachi or Cleveland drill bits you will need to complete all 3 steps in the video, to create the

1. raised center point,

2. relieved heel, and

3. thinned web

NOTE:  With the NEW Ocean PENETRATOR Drill bits you only need to do the first step. The narrow web of the Ocean PENETRATOR drill bits makes web thinning and heel relieving obsolete and significantly shortens the time to sharpen the drill.

Drill Grinding Tips

  • We recommend you switch out your drill bits before they get dull, that way you will only have to do a light dressing / resharpening to get them back into service. if you wait too long and run them while they are dull, you will have to spend more time on the grinder doing the resharpening.

  • Once you have done a complete sharpening of the drill bit as per our video above (i.e. grinding the cutting face, relieving the heel and thinning the web), you will be then be able to get approximately 10 LIGHT DRESSINGS of the drill bit primary cutting surface before you need to do a complete sharpening again.

  • You should get at least 300 plus holes per dressing, and 10 dressings per complete sharpening, giving you approximately 3000 holes before you need to relieve the heel and thin the web again. Of course your own actual mileage may vary considerably from these numbers.

  • You should also adjust your drilling feed rate on your Ocean Avenger Drill Line to get the best compromise between drilling time and the number of holes drilled per sharpening. Increasing the feed rate increases the amount of metal removed, but reduces the number of holes per sharpening.
